Beloveds,
A few updates:
Unbelonging was supposed to be released in August 17th. The book’s small publisher has faced numerous supply chain and shipping delays. It’s now finally coming into the hands of the folks who preordered it. Releasing a book during these challenging political and economic times has been beyond stressful. I can not fully reveal the toll on a debut writer’s morale that these hurdles can take. So, I celebrate the wins.
It was recently included in this reading list for
“This book is daring, courageous, and unapologetic in a way that is rare and refreshing.” I’m so thankful that to be included on this list for Equality Now by the amazing Sheetal Sheth. “In the run-up to International Day of the Girl on October 11th, this month's selections are curated by children's book author and Equality Now Advisory Board member, Sheetal Sheth who shares some of her favorite kids and young adult fiction.”
Have you read this thoughtful and engaging review in South Asian Today? Simran Kaur names so many of the challenging or disruptive conversational elements in the book. I’m deeply encouraged by her reading.
If you’re wondering about what to expect and some background to the book, read this Q&A with Nerd Daily.
We had not expected the book, written for young adults and their educators, would resonate with so many members of the writing community. It’s been humbling and enheartening to read the reviews and praise blurbs by writers I genuinely admire. They seem to be leaning on the book for inspirations for craft, conversation and content. Some of these reviews are shared on goodreads.
A few ways to amplify the book after you read it (if you are inclined):
Gift it to college students, teachers and educators.
Sponsor a $10 copy through the press.
Request your local indie bookstore and library to order copies.
Add a personal review to your blog or social media feed. Word of mouth is vital.
Suggest or give it as a holiday gift. It pairs well with candles, incense, and teas.
Invite me to speak to a book club or classroom or event. I’ll be visiting several campuses in October as a guest speaker.
Some folks who’re reading the book have been very silent. I’m experiencing a sort of stonewalling and loss of connection because of the challenging content I mustered up courage to write about. We can only hope that readers are processing the content. I confess that it’s quite disconcerting to have the silent treatment when you put so much of yourself into a piece of art designed to create shifts. Your support and warmth matter.
In solidarity,
Gayatri
