Beloved readers,

About KidLitSoul
We are a group of like-minded authors/ illustrators for children who have come together after seeing so many in the Kidlit community - a community generally empathic and (obviously) against harming children in any way or form - refusing to speak out against the genocide in Gaza. We banded together, first in shock of the Kidlit silence on Palestinian injustice, and then for support, comfort and solidarity in advocating for Palestinian humanity.
We gather in SOLIDARITY, honoring our expansive ORIGINS and identities, are committed to collective learning, and most importantly LIBERATION.
As KidLitSoul, we support our creatives and those that align with
- By sharing each other's books
- Shouting out good news
- Being available for critique swaps
I’m truly blessed and honored to join this collective as a member.
Here are a few new/ forthcoming books for children by members of KidLit SOUL I highly recommend requesting from the library or preordering if you’re able:
As Ramadan approaches, these titles will make meaningful read-alouds and gifts, too.
From M. O. Yuksel and Hatem Aly, the acclaimed creators of the award-winning In My Mosque, comes Ramadan Kareem—a delightful, diverse celebration of Ramadan around the world. Don’t miss this modern classic that celebrates the emotions and joy of this important holiday.
Praise:
"The collaborators behind In My Mosque cross continents and countries to celebrate Ramadan’s joys and traditions in this painstakingly detailed book. Yuksel’s sensate prose conveys specific practices... especially the wait for iftar, while Aly’s energetic illustrations draw on culturally specific Islamic art and architecture, imparting the season’s tenets and its communal feel." — Publishers Weekly
Dear Muslim Child, your story matters.
In this lyrical ode to Islam, Muslim children all over the world are encouraged to celebrate their faith and traditions.
This inspirational picture book from the author of Dear Black Child encourages Muslim children to take joy and pride in their Islamic faith. Perfect for fans of In My Mosque and The Proudest Blue.
Praise:
“This upbeat and inspiring missive [is] a triumphant mirror book for Black children everywhere, providing encouragement, validation, and joy.” — School Library Journal
If you’re seeking a witty read:
Zips and Eeloo are two aliens who think they are experts in all things human, like making hummus! But they aren’t exactly the experts they claim to be. Will Zips and Eeloo have hummus after all, or just one big, mushy mess? This graphic novel is great for readers who are just beginning their graphic novel journey!
Praise:
"Lopez's expressive, witty artwork is full of comedic, slapstick energy and really complements the characters and the overall story. In addition to the playful, inviting story, Zips and Eeloo actually follow some good directions, and a recipe at the end will give kids a chance to try it on their own. Delicious fun." - Booklist
Looking ahead to Eid:
Maymoona's Moon is a heartwarming picture book about waiting for Eid. Written by Razeena Omar Guta (@razeenareads) and illustrated by Zayneb Haleem (@idotdoodle), readers aged 3 to 8 years will feel the anticipation around the end of Ramadan – the hullabaloo is contagious!
